St George's School

Overview

St George’s School continues to be a good school, described as a “vibrant, happy and inviting” environment for pupils with complex needs. Leaders and staff are “highly ambitious,” ensuring pupils feel “safe, secure, well looked after and prepared for the future” through personalised learning and strong relationships.

Strengths

• Pupils have “extremely positive relationships with staff” who know them very well, aided by strong family partnerships.
• The curriculum is “highly personalised” across four pathways, with an “excellent careers programme” that prepares older pupils for adulthood.
• Staff promote a “culture of high expectations,” managing behaviour effectively so pupils are “good role models.”
• Communication is prioritised, with pupils using systems like Makaton and eye-gaze technology to interact effectively.
• Personal development is strong, with a “relentless focus” on independence, such as shopping trips and self-care skills.

Areas to improve

• The assessment system needs to be “simpler and more consistent” to reduce workload and provide better information for leaders.
• Governors must provide “more challenge to leaders” and ensure a “sharper focus on actions” to make governance more robust.
• Out-of-date policies require swift resolution to ensure compliance and clarity.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff highly aware of pupil vulnerabilities and working well with other agencies to keep children safe.
