Stanmore College

Overview

Stanmore College is a general further education college in north west London, rated ‘Good’ for overall effectiveness. The report describes a ‘calm and orderly environment’ where learners build ‘positive relationships’ and achieve qualifications well. However, the provision for apprenticeships is rated ‘Requires improvement’, and there are specific concerns regarding attendance and curriculum oversight.

Strengths

• Learners study in a ‘friendly and inclusive place’ and demonstrate ‘high levels of respectful behaviour’.
• Teachers ‘plan effectively’ to build subject understanding, with many possessing ‘current industry expertise’.
• The college makes a ‘reasonable contribution to meeting skills needs’ through tailored courses in sectors like health and green skills.
• Safeguarding arrangements are ‘effective’, with a ‘strong safeguarding culture’ and robust policies.
• Most learners receive ‘high-quality careers information’ and progress well to higher education or employment.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure learners’ ‘attendance and punctuality are consistently high’, as current strategies have not yet had enough impact.
• Teachers in all subjects must ‘assess learners’ understanding and provide high-quality feedback’ so learners know how to improve their work.
• Leaders should ensure curriculum managers have ‘accurate oversight’ of their areas to drive improvements, and that foundation courses for learners with high needs meet individual EHC plan targets.

Safeguarding

The report states that ‘the arrangements for safeguarding are effective’, noting that leaders have ‘robust policies and procedures’ and staff are well-trained to deal with concerns ‘appropriately and promptly’.
