The Coppice School

Overview

The Coppice School continues to be a good school, offering a "warm and caring" environment that serves as a "second home" for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The report highlights a "calm and purposeful atmosphere" where pupils are "happy, polite and welcoming," supported by staff with a "detailed understanding of pupils’ needs."

Strengths

• The school delivers a "detailed and well-structured curriculum which is ambitious," with teachers adapting activities effectively so pupils can "learn alongside their classmates."
• Staff possess "strong" subject knowledge and use careful assessment in most subjects to "identify and address any misconceptions or gaps in pupils’ understanding quickly."
• The school provides "exceptional support and care," working purposefully with specialists like occupational therapists to meet pupils’ educational, health, and care needs.
• Pupils benefit from a "wealth of trips and visits" and extra-curricular activities, fostering independence and preparing them well for their "next steps."
• Governors provide "effective support and challenge to leaders," while staff value the "high level of support" and training they receive.

Areas to improve

• In a "small number of subjects," assessment strategies are "underdeveloped," meaning teachers do not always know where there are gaps in pupils’ knowledge.
• The school should "refine its assessment systems" so that these gaps are "identified accurately" and addressed effectively through targeted learning activities.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
