Walworth School

Overview

Walworth School continues to be a good school, providing a supportive environment for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs. The inspection confirms that leaders have raised expectations, resulting in a calm atmosphere where pupils feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.

Strengths

• Pupils’ behaviour is described as “exemplary”, supported by a “‘Walworth family’ culture” built on mutual respect and trust.
• Staff effectively support pupils’ mental health and well-being, helping them to “manage their feelings” and feel “calm”.
• Reading instruction is highly effective; pupils who start unable to read “progress rapidly” and gain confidence through daily practice and immediate correction.
• Pupils enjoy lessons and take pride in their work, particularly in personal, social and health education, where they learn fundamental skills for becoming “well-rounded individuals”.
• Governors provide a “good level of challenge” that drives improvements, and pupils have opportunities to influence school activities through the “smart council”.

Areas to improve

• In a few foundation subjects, the exact knowledge pupils need to learn is not planned precisely enough, preventing staff from checking gaps in learning.
• Some staff lack the necessary skills and training to plan activities that help pupils remember content in these specific subjects, causing them to miss opportunities to learn crucial knowledge.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
