Westfield Nursery School

Overview

Westfield Nursery School is described as a "happy place to be" where children arrive excited and feel safe. The inspection found that clear routines and high-quality learning opportunities help children make a "confident start to their learning," with particular praise for the support provided to those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Strengths

• Children are "kind to each other" and respond well to reminders about having "kind hands, kind feet and kind voices."
• The school prioritises early language development, using roles such as the "special helper" to foster communication and listening skills.
• Staff have a "secure understanding of the curriculum" and use resources to provide engaging activities that match children’s needs.
• Children with SEND are well supported through accurate early identification and effective communication with parents and external organisations.
• Strong relationships between staff and children allow pupils to take "safe risks" during outdoor learning, developing resilience.

Areas to improve

• Staff should consistently adapt and extend activities to challenge children, as they do not always make the most of opportunities to deepen learning across all seven areas.
• Leaders and governors need to embed monitoring systems and develop expertise to fully realise the school’s ambitions for provision.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
