Westfield School

Overview

Westfield School continues to be a good school where pupils thrive through positive relationships with nurturing staff. The curriculum is flexible and tailored to individual needs, ensuring pupils make good progress and are well prepared for adulthood. However, leadership capacity is stretched, and some systems rely too heavily on a small number of leaders.

Strengths

• Staff know pupils "exceptionally well," understanding their wants and needs so that pupils "flourish."
• The curriculum is "well-planned" and "flexible," building from each child’s starting point to match individual needs.
• Communication teaching is a strength, with pupils signing, using symbols, and speaking with confidence.
• Reading is prioritised with a "well-considered phonics curriculum" and adapted materials to ensure understanding.
• Pupils are "prepared well for adulthood" through work experience, community engagement, and independence skills.

Areas to improve

• The school should review its approaches to monitoring and evaluating work, as some aspects are not monitored "as systematically as they could be."
• Leadership capacity is stretched; the school should review roles and responsibilities to ensure all aspects of provision match its ambitions.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
