Ysgol Carreg Hir

Overview

Ysgol Carreg Hir is described as a “very nurturing place” where well-being is central to the ethos, fostering a “strong sense of belonging” and a supportive community. While pupils enjoy a warm welcome and exhibit positive attitudes, learning opportunities do not consistently provide sufficient challenge to support progress in independent learning skills.

Strengths

• Staff provide “bespoke support for all pupils,” including those with individual needs, within an “inclusive learning environment.”
• Pupils show high engagement and pride in the school, with staff offering a “stimulating environment that extends pupils’ learning outdoors.”
• Leaders plan “exceptionally well” to enhance learning and well-being through outdoor experiences.
• The leadership team provides “strong leadership” and values the opinions of staff, pupils, parents, and governors to drive improvement.
• Staff “trust and work well together” to provide consistent support for pupils and each other.

Areas to improve

• Improve pupil progress in skills, especially in writing, by providing “greater challenge for more able pupils.”
• Ensure self-evaluation processes are focused to improve teaching and learning, with specific and measurable improvement priorities.
• Develop effective assessment methods across the school to help pupils understand how to improve their work.

Safeguarding

The report states that the headteacher, teachers, and support staff “take good care of the pupils” and that well-being is placed at the centre of the school’s ethos.
