Ysgol Cynddelw

Overview

Ysgol Cynddelw is part of the Dyffryn Ceiriog federation, providing dual-stream Welsh and English-medium education. The headteacher has established a “clear and robust vision” prioritising pupil well-being and Welsh language development, supported by enthusiastic staff and effective joint planning. While leaders understand the school’s strengths, self-evaluation processes do not always identify necessary improvements, and teachers do not consistently provide opportunities for pupils to apply extended written or numeracy skills.

Strengths

• Staff work together effectively, with teachers planning jointly to deliver a curriculum that “meets the needs of many pupils successfully.”
• Learning experiences effectively support progress in “Welsh oracy skills and digital skills.”
• “Nearly all pupils behave exceptionally well,” treating others with respect and engaging conscientiously in work.
• Pupils enjoy “stimulating and engaging experiences” and contribute to discussions “maturely and sensibly.”

Areas to improve

• Self-evaluation processes must identify areas for improvement in a timely manner to support pupil progress.
• Teachers should provide more purposeful opportunities for pupils to develop skills in “independent learning activities.”
• Opportunities for pupils to apply extended written and numeracy skills consistently across areas of learning need to be improved.
