Ysgol Gymraeg Abercynon

Overview

The acting headteacher is working diligently with leaders to address inconsistencies and is beginning to have a positive effect on provision. Staff create an inclusive environment where many pupils are motivated to achieve well, though teaching quality varies across the school.

Strengths

• Teachers and assistants work together effectively to provide an "inclusive and supportive learning environment" and develop "caring and secure working relationships".
• Many pupils have "positive attitudes to learning" and are "proud to communicate in Welsh".
• In the best practice, teachers have "high expectations" and support pupils to develop skills in "rich activities across the curriculum".
• Pupils "develop their literacy and digital skills consistently" and demonstrate "suitable perseverance and resilience".

Areas to improve

• Ensure teachers have "high and consistent expectations" to challenge pupils, as some currently "over-direct learning" which limits pupil decision-making.
• Provide valuable opportunities for pupils to develop and apply skills, "particularly numeracy", independently across the curriculum.
