Ysgol Pentrefoelas

Overview

Ysgol Pentrefoelas is described as a “close-knit community” that “celebrates Welshness, courtesy and respect exceptionally well.” The school offers a “homely and supportive learning environment” where staff are committed to high-quality care, resulting in strong pupil attitudes and pride in their local area.

Strengths

• The headteacher provides “wise leadership” that values the contributions of everyone involved in pupils’ education.
• Pupils use the Welsh language “completely naturally” and display significant pride in their language, learning, and village.
• Staff successfully plan “varied and purposeful learning and play experiences,” fostering a supportive atmosphere.
• Provision for pupils with additional learning needs is “purposeful,” enabling them to make “good progress in their learning.”
• Pupils have regular opportunities to build self-confidence through enthusiastic participation in community performances and eisteddfodau.

Areas to improve

• Improve pupils’ writing skills, as provision for developing extended writing across the curriculum is currently inconsistent.
• Provide activities that challenge all pupils to apply their numeracy skills across the curriculum, as current provision is inconsistent.
• Ensure that feedback from staff identifies the next steps in pupils’ learning effectively, as teachers do not always provide activities that support pupils to achieve their best.

Safeguarding

The headteacher, with the support of staff and governors, “promotes a culture of safeguarding effectively.”
