Ysgol Y Lawnt

Overview

Ysgol y Lawnt is described as a “successful learning community” that “celebrates the progress and achievement of all pupils particularly effectively.” The school benefits from “clear and wise leadership” and an ethos promoting “Welshness, courtesy and responsibility,” resulting in pupils who show “very strong attitudes to learning” and take pride in their school.

Strengths

• Leadership provides a “shared vision” that fosters a positive environment where pupils “take care of others” and demonstrate high levels of courtesy.
• Teachers maintain “high expectations” and use “original experiences” and effective questioning to engage pupils and extend their understanding.
• Well-being initiatives, such as weekly ‘Gwener Gwenu’ activities, have a “positive effect on pupils’ ability to apply themselves fully to their learning.”
• The ‘Caffi Clic a Chlonc’ café offers valuable opportunities for pupils to develop “real-life skills” by cooking, handling money, and analysing profit with community members.
• Most pupils, including those with additional learning needs, show progress from their starting points in their skills.

Areas to improve

• The school must “improve pupils’ Welsh reading skills,” which the report states are “not developing well enough.”
• Leadership should “share best practice in teaching across the school” to ensure consistency and high standards throughout.
