Barley (VA) Church of England First School

Overview

Pupils at this small village school are described as happy, well-supported, and kind to one another. The report highlights a “broad and rich curriculum” that extends pupils’ interests and prepares them well for future transitions. Leaders have made positive changes to teaching and learning, resulting in high expectations and a calm environment where pupils work hard.

Strengths

• Pupils achieve well and enjoy a curriculum that includes specialist teachers and links with international schools, helping them consider “other viewpoints”.
• Staff are “well trained” with good subject knowledge, presenting information in ways that help all pupils understand, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
• Leaders prioritise reading by using a consistent phonics scheme across the federation, ensuring continuity for pupils moving between schools.
• Personal development is supported effectively through a well-implemented programme where pupils can discuss their feelings and build resilience.
• Governors actively monitor school improvement through regular visits and dialogue with staff and pupils.

Areas to improve

• Pupils in the early stages of reading are not consistently given books that match their phonics knowledge, hindering their ability to practise skills systematically.
• Assessment information in a few foundation subjects is not used consistently by leaders to check teaching or plan strategically, potentially leaving knowledge gaps unaddressed.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff receiving regular training and leaders acting swiftly to follow up on concerns to keep pupils safe.
