John Grant School, Caister-on-Sea

Overview

The report describes a school where “warmth and kindness shine through” and pupils enjoy strong friendships. Leaders have created a culture where pupils’ well-being is central, resulting in “exemplary” behaviour and high levels of respect. The curriculum is carefully designed to meet the complex needs of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, ensuring they learn and develop well.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate “exemplary” behaviour, showing “consistently high levels of respect” for peers and adults.
• The curriculum is “carefully designed to meet the differing needs of pupils,” with regular checks ensuring appropriate pathways.
• Sixth-form students develop “high levels of resilience and independence,” leaving ready for adulthood with confidence.
• Attendance is “extremely well,” with the school providing quick support if pupils begin to miss lessons.
• Staff receive “high-quality guidance and training,” and governors provide “unwavering support” while asking probing questions.

Areas to improve

• Adults sometimes lack the depth of knowledge to “skilfully guide younger pupils to apply what they know in different activities and contexts,” meaning some pupils do not learn as well as they could. The school must implement planned training to address this.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
