Ligoniel Primary School and Nursery Unit

Overview

This Sustaining Improvement Inspection was conducted during industrial action involving action short of strike, meaning most teachers did not cooperate with inspectors. Consequently, the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) was unable to fully evaluate the quality of learning, teaching, or the school’s capacity for improvement. The report concludes that the ETI is unable to assure parents of the quality of education provided and designates the school as a high priority for future inspection with no further notice.

Strengths

• The previous inspection in May 2015 evaluated the overall effectiveness of the school as good.
• Safeguarding arrangements were found to reflect broadly the guidance from the Department of Education.
• A group of year 6 children reported that they feel safe and cared for in school.
• Pupils stated they know what to do and who to speak to if they have concerns about their safety or well-being.

Areas to improve

• The door at the back of the school leading to the rear playground needs to be made secure.
• The school must address the impact of industrial action which prevented the ETI from evaluating the quality of education.

Safeguarding

The report states that safeguarding arrangements reflect Department of Education guidance and pupils feel safe, but the ETI was unable to fully evaluate the outworking of these arrangements due to the industrial action.
