Tannery Drift School

Overview

Pupils at Tannery Drift School are described as “good-natured and delightful,” benefiting from “respectful and caring relationships” with staff. The school delivers a high-quality education with an “ambitious and carefully planned curriculum,” fostering a “calm and purposeful atmosphere” where pupils show strong resilience and enthusiasm for learning.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate “exceptionally well” behaviour, showing high levels of focus and a “strong sense of personal responsibility.”
• Staff provide effective reading instruction, ensuring pupils become “fluent and confident readers” through targeted support.
• Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities “generally progress well” due to accurate identification of needs and appropriate modifications.
• The school promotes character development, allowing pupils to “flourish” through leadership roles and clubs that nurture their talents.
• Leaders and governors share a “common vision,” supporting staff well-being and ensuring manageable workloads.

Areas to improve

• In a few subjects, teachers do not always provide activities that account for what pupils already know, meaning some tasks do not effectively help pupils build on existing knowledge. The school should ensure learning activities develop individual key skills across all subjects.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
