West Heath Nursery School

Overview

West Heath Nursery School is described as a "welcoming place to learn" where children settle quickly due to strong adult support. The school’s ethos of "nurturing happy minds" is evident, with staff committed to helping every child "flourish and achieve," including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Strengths

• Staff use "consistent strategies" to encourage positive behaviour, creating "calm spaces where children learn well."
• The school effectively builds "communication and language skills" through rhymes, songs, and thoughtfully planned storytime sessions.
• Children with SEND are identified quickly and receive prompt help, strengthened by "effective partnerships with external agencies."
• Parents are actively engaged through initiatives like a lending library and workshops on pre-writing and behaviour.
• Staff feel "supported and listened to," valuing leaders’ investment in their work-life balance.

Areas to improve

• The early years curriculum design is sometimes unclear regarding key knowledge, meaning staff lack guidance to ensure high-quality provision and children do not always build knowledge "over time as well as they could."
• Some governors lack sufficient knowledge of strategic aspects, including curriculum effectiveness, preventing them from providing "effective challenge and support" to leaders.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
