West Lancashire Community High School

Overview

West Lancashire Community High School continues to be a good school, providing a supportive environment for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities. The report highlights a "close-knit atmosphere" where staff build strong relationships, helping pupils feel "happy and confident" while striving for academic and social success.

Strengths

• Staff are "highly skilled at understanding pupils’ individual needs" and act swiftly to prevent frustrations from escalating.
• The curriculum is "ambitious" and tailored to prepare pupils for adulthood, including practical skills like shopping and using public transport.
• Pupils benefit from initiatives that encourage a "love of reading," such as library visits and a phonics programme for early readers.
• The school provides "extensive careers provision," ensuring pupils progress to "positive destinations" through work experience and employer encounters.
• Staff workload is managed effectively, with leaders taking "tangible steps" to ensure it remains "reasonable, realistic and manageable."

Areas to improve

• In a small number of subjects, the school must clarify the specific knowledge and vocabulary pupils should learn and the order of teaching, as teachers sometimes move on before pupils have a "secure understanding."
• Systems to monitor and support weaker readers in key stage 5 are "underdeveloped," meaning some students do not receive timely help to become "confident and fluent readers."

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
