Ysgol Bro Cynfal

Overview

Ysgol Bro Cynfal has recently merged into the Bro Tangelli federation, where most pupils enjoy school and behave respectfully. However, the inspection found that inconsistent teaching in upper years and ineffective self-evaluation processes have slowed pupil progress, leading to the imposition of special measures.

Strengths

• Most pupils are "polite and thoughtful" and feel confident that the school "responds promptly to any concerns".
• Staff maintain a "close and effective working relationship with pupils" and provide "purposeful activities" that meet their needs.
• Where teaching is at its best, federation-wide collaboration creates "stimulating and interesting areas" that support younger pupils to "make good progress in their skills".
• The headteacher in charge is "supported enthusiastically by staff and governors" in creating a "purposeful vision for the new federation".

Areas to improve

• Ensure self-evaluation processes "evaluate pupils’ outcomes thoroughly to prioritise specific areas for improvement in provision to raise standards".
• Ensure "consistency in effective teaching methods" to support pupils’ progress, particularly addressing the tendency to "over-direct learning" in upper years.
• Provide "purposeful opportunities for pupils to apply their numeracy and extended writing skills across the curriculum".

Safeguarding

The report states that most pupils are confident that the school "responds promptly to any concerns they have".
