Edenderry Primary School

Overview

The inspection was conducted during industrial action, with staff refusing to cooperate with inspectors. Consequently, the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) was “unable to assure... the quality of education being provided for the children.” Most evaluation areas, including outcomes for learners and quality of provision, could not be assessed due to this lack of cooperation.

Strengths

• The school has an “effective school development plan” that identifies appropriate areas for improvement.
• Governors are “well-informed about the life and work of the school” and contribute effectively to management.
• Year 6 children reported that they “feel safe and happy in school” and know who to contact regarding safety concerns.
• Children spoke positively about “shared learning experiences” with peers in partnership schools through the Shared Education Signature Project.

Areas to improve

• The ETI was unable to evaluate the effectiveness of strategic leadership, middle leadership, or actions to sustain improvement.
• The report notes that “old radiators, in parts of the school, are extremely hot to the touch,” indicating a health and safety concern.

Safeguarding

The school provided evidence that safeguarding arrangements “reflect broadly the guidance from the Department of Education” and include a “comprehensive suite of policies and procedures,” although the ETI was unable to fully evaluate their outworking due to the industrial action.
