Oak Haven School

Overview

Brownhill School is an all-through special school where pupils are “valued, listened to and well cared for.” The inspection found that while personal development is good and relationships are positive, the overall quality of education requires improvement due to uneven curriculum implementation and inconsistent learning outcomes.

Strengths

• Pupils receive a “warm welcome” and build “strong, positive relationships” with staff who understand their individual needs.
• There is a “sharp focus on reading,” with consistent phonics and reading sessions helping pupils become “fluent and confident readers.”
• Personal development is strong, with pupils learning about “democracy,” “human rights,” and how to keep themselves safe online and in the community.
• Staff feel “valued and supported,” and governors have worked diligently to realise improvement actions with an “ambitious vision for the future.”

Areas to improve

• The key stage 4 curriculum is “not as ambitious or as broad as it could be,” limiting access to vocational courses for some pupils.
• Curriculum delivery is inconsistent across subjects, meaning pupils “do not build their knowledge well enough over time.”
• Assessment checks are underdeveloped, failing to identify gaps in knowledge, and attendance remains low in key stage 4.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
